Target Background

Function
Essential protein. Required for male and female gametophytes development. Exhibits sn-1 acyltransferase activity with high specificity for acyl-coenzyme A, thus triggering storage lipid biosynthesis and playing an important role in the Kennedy pathway of glycerolipid biosynthesis. Catalyzes triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation involved in membrane lipid and oil biosynthesis, especially in seeds. Contributes also to the biosynthesis of both polar lipids and TAG in developing leaves, as well as lipid droplet production in developing pollen grains. Seems to not contribute to surface lipid biosynthesis (e.g. waxes and cutin).
Gene References into Functions
  1. contributes to synthesis of intracellular glycerolipids but not surface lipids PMID: 27325892
  2. GPAT9 is the endoplasmic reticulum-localized enzyme responsible for plant membrane lipid and oil biosynthesis. PMID: 26586834
  3. Data indicated that both GPAT8 and GPAT9 were localized to the endoplasmic reticulum and their N- and C-termini were oriented towards the cytosol, however, these two proteins contained distinct types of ER retrieval signals. [GPAT9] PMID: 19539490
Subcellular Location
Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
1-acyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase family
Tissue Specificity
Up-regulated during embryogenesis. Expressed in seedlings, leaves, stems, roots, floral buds, flowers, pollen, and siliques at various developmental stages.
