Target Background

Function
High-affinity potassium transporter. Also transport rubidium, with the same affinity and cesium, with a lower affinity.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The deficiency in K uptake induced by the loss of OsHAK1 functionality was responsible for the disruption of sugar metabolism. PMID: 30080612
  2. A knock-out mutation results in 1) reduced accumulation of potassium throughout the plant, 2) reduced activity of sucrose synthase, acid invertase and neutral invertase in sink tissues, and 3) down-regulation of genes encoding sucrose transporters and genes encoding monosaccharide transporters. The consequence is reduced root growth, pollen viability and fertility. PMID: 30080612
  3. in rice roots, potassium transport systems other than OsHAK1 make little or no contribution to cesium uptake. PMID: 28922748
  4. OsHAK1 plays an essential role in potassium (K)-mediated rice growth and salt tolerance over low and high K concentration ranges. PMID: 26046301
Subcellular Location
Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
HAK/KUP transporter (TC 2.A.72.3) family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed almost exclusively in roots.
