Target Background

Function
Catalyzes N-terminal palmitoylation of SHH; which is required for SHH signaling during limb development. Promotes the transfer of palmitoyl-CoA from the cytoplasmic to the luminal side of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, where SHH palmitoylation occurs.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Mutations in Hedgehog acyltransferase (Hhat) perturb Hedgehog signaling, resulting in severe acrania-holoprosencephaly-agnathia craniofacial defects. PMID: 23055936
Subcellular Location
Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Golgi apparatus membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Membrane-bound acyltransferase family, HHAT subfamily
