Target Background

Function
Required for the assembly of iron-sulfur (Fe/S) clusters in mitochondria. Assisted by the DnaJ-like co-chaperone JAC1 and the nucleotide exchange factor MGE1, it mediates ATP-dependent Fe-S cluster transfer from the scaffold proteins ISU1/ISU2 to GRX5.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data show that mitochondrial Hsp70 chaperone Ssq1 interacts with the monothiol glutaredoxin 5 (Grx5) at a binding site different from that of Isu1. PMID: 23615440
  2. the induction of the zim17 mutant phenotype leads to strong import defects for Ssc1-dependent matrix-targeted precursor proteins that correlate with a significantly reduced binding of newly imported substrate proteins to Ssc1. PMID: 24030826
  3. formation of a Jac1-Isu1 complex can overcome a lowered affinity of Ssq1 for Isu in vivo as well as in vitro PMID: 15958384
  4. Ssq1p/Jac1p/Mge1p are not important for Fe/S cluster synthesis on Isu1p PMID: 16431909
  5. Description of the role of ssq1/ssc2 in maturation of yeast frataxin (Yfh1p). PMID: 9660806
  6. Initial description of SSH1 (also referred to as SSC2 and SSQ1) as a mitochondrial heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) of yeast. [SSH1] PMID: 8707841
