Target Background

Function

Associates with aggregated proteins, together with IbpA, to stabilize and protect them from irreversible denaturation and extensive proteolysis during heat shock and oxidative stress. Aggregated proteins bound to the IbpAB complex are more efficiently refolded and reactivated by the ATP-dependent chaperone systems ClpB and DnaK/DnaJ/GrpE. Its activity is ATP-independent.

An RNA thermometer in its 5' untranslated region, forming a secondary structure upstream of ibpB is functional in vitro but not in vivo, suggesting downregulation of ibpB expression in the presence of IbpA. PMID: 20864473
The lack of IbpAB proteins in E. coli cells results in endogenous oxidative stress and overproduction of extracellular indole, which inhibits the growth of the biofilm at the air-liquid interface. PMID: 19797360
