Target Background

Function
Inducible lysine decarboxylase that catalyzes the proton-dependent decarboxylation of L-lysine to produce the polyamine cadaverine and carbon dioxide. Plays a role in pH homeostasis by consuming protons and neutralizing the acidic by-products of carbohydrate fermentation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. To enhance the thermal and alkaline pH stability of the lysine decarboxylase from Escherichia coli (CadA) by engineering the decameric interface and explore its potential for industrial applications PMID: 29349625
  2. The transcriptional activator CadC in Escherichia coli, a member of the ToxR-like proteins, activates transcription of the cadBA operon encoding the lysine decarboxylase CadA and the lysine-cadaverine antiporter CadB PMID: 16491024
  3. Helps phosphate starved cells tolerate production of fermentation acids under anaerobic conditions. PMID: 17209032
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm.
