Target Background

Function
Heterochronic protein which acts downstream of let-7 in temporal patterning. Plays a role in the developmental timing of postembryonic hypodermal seam cell division and fusion events and adult alae production. Represses lin-29 during late larval stages, which prevents terminal differentiation of hypodermal seam cells and promotes their division. Involved in post-transcriptional gene regulation, uses two independent pathways. Has direct and specific RNA-binding activity and, depending on the location (5'UTR or 3'UTR) of the target site, triggers either mRNA decay or repression of translation. Degrades the mRNA of transcription factor dmd-3 to govern the timing and extent of male tail tip morphogenesis. Plays a role in the sexual maturation of the nervous system.
Gene References into Functions
  1. LIN-41 represses translation of spn-4 and meg-1during oocyte meiotic maturation and the oocyte-to-embryo transition. PMID: 28576864
  2. Study reports that the stem cell fate regulator LIN41 silences mRNAs through two distinct and separable mechanisms: translational repression or degradation. Choice of mechanism is specified by the location of the LIN41- binding site on the target mRNA. PMID: 28111013
  3. Lin-41 regulates the gene expression required for timely centrosome elimination around the diplotene stage in female germ cells. PMID: 26764090
  4. regulation of LIN-41 alone is necessary and sufficient to prevent vulval rupturing. Hence, let-7 does not function to reduce gene expression noise broadly, but to direct vulval development through extensive regulation of a single, defined target PMID: 25669883
  5. LIN-41 appears to function in the germline and the soma via different molecular mechanisms PMID: 25167051
  6. In older anterior ventral microtubule axons, let-7inhibits regeneration by down-regulating LIN-41, an important AVM axon regeneration-promotingfactor. PMID: 23599497
  7. NMR structure reveals details of the binding of let-7 miRNA to lin-41 mRNA which involves formation of a complex with non-canonical structural elements within the seed region. PMID: 20660479
  8. lin-41, a homologue of the vertebtate lin-41, functions as a heterochronic gene. PMID: 16477647
  9. two novel, gain-of-function alleles of lin-41. Small changes affecting LIN-41 could have been significant for male tail evolution.lin-41 governs the timing and extent of male tail tip morphogenesis in a dose-dependent manner. PMID: 16806150
  10. NMR solution structure of a model mimicking the interaction of let-7 miRNA with its complementary site in the 3' untranslated region of the lin-41 mRNA. PMID: 18296482
