Target Background

Function
Photoreceptor for short wavelength (UV) light that mediates UV-light-induced avoidance behavior. Directly senses and absorbs both UV-A and UV-B light with very high efficiency. Absorption of UV-B but not UV-A light shows resistance to photobleaching. In contrast to other photoreceptors, does not use a prosthetic chromophore to capture photons and only depends on its protein conformation. Might have a role in response to white light exposure.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Unlike typical photoreceptors employing a prosthetic chromophore to capture photons, LITE-1 strictly depends on its protein conformation for photon absorption; further two tryptophan residues critical for LITE-1 function were identified. Interestingly, unlike GPCRs, LITE-1 adopts a reversed membrane topology. Thus, LITE-1, a taste receptor homolog, represents a distinct type of photoreceptor in the animal kingdom. PMID: 27863243
  2. receptor family members LITE-1 and GUR-3 are required for the inhibition of feeding by light and hydrogen peroxide. PMID: 25640076
  3. data suggest a model in which LITE-1 transduces light signals in a photoreceptor neuron via G protein signaling, leading to upregulation of the second messenger cGMP, followed by opening of cGMP-sensitive CNG channels and stimulation of photoreceptors PMID: 20436480

Insect chemoreceptor superfamily, Gustatory receptor (GR) family
