Target Background

Function
Positively regulates the transcription of the maltose regulon whose gene products are responsible for uptake and catabolism of malto-oligosaccharides. Specifically binds to the promoter region of its target genes, recognizing a short DNA motif called the MalT box (5'-GGA[TG]GA-3'). Displays weak ATPase activity, but this activity is not required for promoter binding.
Gene References into Functions
  1. pinpointed the NOD-arm interface of the MalT STAND transcription factor, and generated a MalT variant in which this interface can be covalently locked on demand, thereby trapping the NOD in the closed state PMID: 25740650
  2. The molecular entity that interacts with MalT is not free MalK, but the maltose transporter, MalFGK(2) , which sequesters MalT to the membrane. PMID: 22715926
  3. The inducer maltotriose binds in the central cavity of the tetratricopeptide-like sensor domain of MalT. PMID: 20545845
  4. Substitutions of R171 impaired both ATP hydrolysis and multimerization, which is consistent with an arginine finger function and provides further evidence that ATP hydrolysis is primarily catalyzed by MalT multimers. PMID: 20693326
  5. Data suggest that the MalT/MalK interaction might involve two distinct contact sites on each partner. PMID: 15733913
  6. ATPase activity of malT is not essential for downstream signaling but plays a key role in the integration of regulatory signals. PMID: 17964259
  7. Overexpression of glk leads to a reduction in mal gene expression and interpret of this repression is a direct interaction of Glk with MalT concomitant with MalT inhibition. PMID: 19028900
