Target Background

Function
Subunit of an amiloride-sensitive cation channel (degenerin channel complex) permeable for sodium, potassium, lithium and N-methylglucamine, and required for mechanosensory transduction (touch sensitivity). Positively regulates the activity of the putative mechanosensory transduction channel. May link the mechanosensory channel and the microtubule cytoskeleton of the touch receptor neurons. Required for the function of a set of six touch receptor neurons.
Gene References into Functions
  1. the carboxyl terminus of podocin/MEC-2 has to be placed at the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane to mediate cholesterol binding and contribute to ion channel activity. PMID: 24596097
  2. [review] Similarly to stomatins from other species, C. elegans counterparts may also be membrane proteins with intracellular amino- and carboxyl-terminals. PMID: 21501885
  3. MEC-2, Podocin, and probably many other PHB-domain proteins by binding to themselves, cholesterol, and target proteins regulate the formation and function of large protein-cholesterol supercomplexes in the plasma membrane PMID: 17079490
  4. MEC-2 with MEC-6 increase open probability of ENaC (constitutively active MEC-4/MEC-10 in Xenopus oocytes), decrease the efficiency of Ca2+ block. Its palmitoylation and cholesterol-binding activity are required for channel activation PMID: 18504316
Subcellular Location
Membrane; Single-pass membrane protein.
