Target Background

Function
Nuclear envelope protein which has essential roles in assembly of nuclear pore complexes and in chromatin maintenance during the cell cycle. Appears to be a stable structural component of the nuclear envelope during interphase. In dividing cells, localizes to kinetochores during early stages of mitosis and then to chromatin during late mitosis. Important for several mitotic processes including chromosome condensation, kinetochore assembly, chromosome segregation and cell-cycle timing. In postmitotic cells, plays a role in the early steps of nuclear pore complex assembly by recruiting the nucleoporins npp-10 and npp-5 to chromatin. Also involved in meiotic chromosome segregation. May function downstream of the Ran GTPase signaling pathway.
Gene References into Functions
  1. the cell can exit the division without reforming the nuclear envelope to uncover an intriguing role of the nucleoporin MEL-28 in mediating chromosome segregation via its interaction with PP1 at the kinetochore PMID: 27623378
  2. During nuclear assembly, MEL-28 recruits PP1c to the periphery of decondensed chromatin, where it directs formation of a functional nuclear compartment. Thus, a pool of phosphatase activity associated with a kinetochore-localized nucleoporin contributes to two key events that occur during M-phase exit in metazoans: kinetochore disassembly and nuclear reassembly. PMID: 27623381
  3. MEL-28/ELYS is required for the recruitment of nucleoporins to chromatin and acts as a seeding point for postmitotic nuclear pore complex assembly. PMID: 17235358
Subcellular Location
