Target Background

Function
Serine/threonine-protein kinase involved in cell autonomous neuroblast asymmetric divisions that generate one precursor cell and one apoptotic cell by controlling spindle positioning, myosin distribution and the segregation of cell fate determinants. Promotes cell shedding during embryogenesis, probably through the endocytosis-mediated removal of cell adhesion molecules such as hmp-1 from the cell surface. May act downstream of par-4/strd-1/mop-25 to regulate cell shedding.
Gene References into Functions
  1. pig-1 MELK acts downstream of ces-1 Snail to cause the neurosecretory motor neuron neuroblast to divide asymmetrically by size and along the correct cell division axis. PMID: 28652378
  2. T169 residue in the PIG-1 activation loop is essential for PIG-1 activation by Par-4. PMID: 23267054
  3. PIG-1 promotes shed-cell detachment by preventing the cell-surface expression of cell-adhesion molecules; findings reveal a mechanism for apoptotic cell elimination that is fundamentally distinct from that of canonical programmed cell death PMID: 22801495
  4. Results demonstrate that pig-1 regulates asymmetric divisions of neuroblasts that divide to produce an apoptotic cell and either a neural precursor or a neuron. PMID: 16774992

Cytoplasm. Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, microtubule organizing center, centrosome.
