Target Background

Function
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase required to generate the methyl groups necessary for methionine synthetase to convert homocysteine to methionine.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The invariant aspartate 120 is a critical residue for E. coli methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, with major roles in folate binding and catalysis, and a minor role in redox modulation. PMID: 15865426
  2. Multiple onformation, which allows aspartic acid 120 to hydrogen bond to the pterin ring in the folate complex but must move to an "open" conformation to allow NADH to bind. PMID: 16114881
  3. Results suggest that Leu may be a suitable replacement for Phe223 in the oxidative half-reaction of E. coli methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. PMID: 19610625
