Target Background

Function
Core component of the splicing-dependent multiprotein exon junction complex (EJC) deposited at splice junctions on mRNAs. Involved in exon definition of genes containing long introns, including the rolled/MAPK gene. The mago-tsu heterodimer interacts with the EJC key regulator Pym leading to EJC disassembly in the cytoplasm. Has a role in oskar mRNA localization to the posterior pole of the developing oocyte, and may also be involved in polarization of the oocyte microtubule cytoskeleton.
Gene References into Functions
  1. MAPK is the primary functional target of mago in eye development; in cultured cells, Mago knockdown disproportionately affects other large genes located in heterochromatin PMID: 20946982
  2. Mago Nashi, Tsunagi/Y14, and Ranshi form a complex that influences oocyte differentiation in Drosophila melanogaster PMID: 20045686
  3. mago nashi is required for germline stem cell differentiation, but surprisingly mago nashi functions independently of tsunagi/Y14 in this process PMID: 17628520
Subcellular Location
Nucleus. Cytoplasm. Note=Part of the EJC assembled on mRNAs in the nucleus and remains part of the complex when mRNA moves into the cytoplasm.
Protein Families
