Target Background

Function
Important for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) stability and repair. Recognizes and binds to base-base and small insertion-deletion mismatches in mtDNA. ATP binding and hydrolysis is crucial for function. Binding to a mismatched base pair attenuates ATP hydrolysis. Also involved in proper sorting of mtDNA during mtDNA transmission.
Gene References into Functions
  1. MSH1-dependent repair represents a significant back-up to mtBER in the repair of oxidative damage in mtDNA PMID: 15010316
  2. Msh1p-enhanced homologous recombination may play an important role in the prevention of oxidative lesion-induced rearrangements of the mitochondrial genome. PMID: 19056520
  3. Results show that the role of Msh1p in BER is unlikely to be involved in the avoidance of large-scale deletions and rearrangements. PMID: 19398768
Subcellular Location
Mitochondrion.
