Target Background

Function

Mechanosensitive channel that opens in response to stretch forces in the membrane lipid bilayer. Exhibits a 6.3-fold preference for chloride over sodium. Regulates osmotic forces during pollen hydration and germination.

Gene References into Functions

An intact MSL8 channel is required for normal pollen function during hydration and germination. These data establish MSL8 as the first plant MS channel to fulfill previously established criteria for assignment as a mechanotransducer. PMID: 28339550
MSL8 thus senses and responds to changes in membrane tension associated with pollen hydration and germination. PMID: 26494758
