Target Background

Function
Binds to the plus end of microtubules and regulates microtubule dynamics and microtubule organization. Promotes cytoplasmic microtubule nucleation and elongation. May act as a microtubule antipause factor that rapidly catalyzes the transition from pause to either growth or shrinkage. Involved in mitotic spindle elongation. Involved in the establishment of cell polarity and mitotic spindle orientation in neuroblasts. Required for maintaining the bipolarity of acentrosomal meiotic spindles; the function is dependent on tacc and involves ncd. Involved in oocyte microtubule cytoskeleton organization and bicoid mRNA localization. Seems to be involved in elongation of kinetochore-derived microtubule fibers.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Msps tubulin overexpressed gene domains have distinct architectures that bind either free or polymerized tubulin, and that a polarized array drives microtubule polymerization. PMID: 28512144
  2. Findings suggest that Msps is a novel Rac effector that acts, in partnership with Orbit, to regionally regulate microtubule dynamics. PMID: 26406596
  3. Drosophila melanogaster mini spindles TOG3 utilizes unique structural elements to promote domain stability and maintain a TOG1- and TOG2-like tubulin-binding surface. PMID: 25720490
  4. MT dynamics are promoted by the independent as well as the cooperative action of XMAP215(msps) polymerase and the EB1-Sentin duo. PMID: 23185033
  5. Msps exhibits EB1-dependent and spatially regulated microtubule localization, targeting to microtubule plus ends in the cell interior and decorating the lattice of growing and shrinking microtubules in the cell periphery PMID: 21965297
  6. Data suggest a model in which CLASP and Msps converge in an antagonistic balance in the Abl signaling pathway. PMID: 20498300
  7. msps is required for the structure and function of cytoplasmic microtubules during oogenesis. PMID: 15530399
  8. The depletion or mutation of Msps prevents interphase microtubules from extending to the cell periphery and leads to the formation of stable microtubule bundles. PMID: 15775959
  9. Hsp90 is required to localize msps to the mitotic spindle. PMID: 17376965
  10. Crystal structures of the tubulin binding domains of XMAP215 (yeast Stu2p and Drosophila Msps), EB1 (yeast Bim1p and human EB1), and CLIP-170 (human), which reveal diverse tubulin binding interfaces, are reported. PMID: 17889670
