Target Background

Function
Assembly factor required for Rieske Fe-S protein RIP1 incorporation into the cytochrome b-c1 (CIII) complex. Functions as a chaperone, binding to this subunit within the mitochondrial matrix and stabilizing it prior to its translocation and insertion into the late CIII dimeric intermediate within the mitochondrial inner membrane. Modulates the mitochondrial matrix zinc pool.
Gene References into Functions
  1. findings show that the matrix protein Mzm1 functions as a Rip1 chaperone, stabilizing Rip1 prior to the translocation step PMID: 22927643
  2. Mzm1 may function primarily to stabilize Rip1 prior to inner membrane (IM) insertion or alternatively to aid in the presentation of Rip1 to the inner membrane translocation complex for extrusion of the folded domain containing the iron-sulfur center. PMID: 21807901
Subcellular Location
Mitochondrion matrix.
Protein Families
Complex I LYR family, MZM1 subfamily
