Synthesizes nicotianamine, a polyamine which serves as a sensor for the physiological iron status within the plant, and/or might be involved in the transport of iron.

Atnas4 plants showed enhanced sensitivity to cadmium while plants overexpressing AtNAS4 were more tolerant.. AtNAS4 displays an important role in iron distribution and proper response to iron deficiency and cadmium supply. PMID: 23759098
