Target Background

Function
Involved in non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). Facilitates the transport of LIF1 into the nucleus, where it can interact with DNA ligase DNL4 to repair double-strand breaks (DSB). Mediates mating-type regulation of NHEJ. Prevents chromosome circularisation by NHEJ in absence of telomerase.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Our results reveal novel roles for Nej1 in the recruitment of Pol4 and Rad27 to in vivo DNA double strand breaks and the coordination of the end processing and ligation reactions of non-homologous end joining. PMID: 25942368
  2. C-terminus of Nej1 is critical for nuclear localization and non-homologous end-joining PMID: 24369855
  3. Nej1 not only plays an important role in determining repair pathway choice by participating in the initial NHEJ complex formed at DSBs but also contributes to the reactivation of Dnl4-Lif1 after repair is complete PMID: 21149442
  4. Nej1p is phosphorylated in response to DNA damage in a manner that relies on the DNA damage checkpoint kinases Mec1p, Rad53p and Dun1p. PMID: 17101301
  5. Nej1 interacts with Lif1 and supports NHEJ, similar to the distantly related mammalian Nej1 orthologue XLF PMID: 17567543
  6. Structural characterization reveals that Nej1p exists as a dimer, and that residues 1-244 are sufficient for dimer formation PMID: 17765666
  7. Nej1 physically interacts with Srs2. PMID: 19571008
