Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the oxidative cleavage at the 15,15'-double bond of carotenoids and the simultaneous all-trans to 11-cis isomerization of one cleavage product. Carotenoids like 11-cis retinal can promote visual pigment biogenesis in the dark. Essential for the biosynthesis of the 3-hydroxyretinal chromophore of rhodopsin from zeaxanthin and for proper photoreceptor development. Also essential for larval light perception.
Gene References into Functions
  1. study identifies NinaB as a key component for visual pigment production and provides evidence that chromophore in opsin-deficient photoreceptors can elicit retinal degeneration PMID: 19889630
  2. Beta-carotene is transported to the adult brain, where cellular uptake by NinaD allows cleavage by the NinaB enzyme to produce retinal PMID: 17344064
  3. Data show that carotenoid-isomerooxygenase activity of NinaB is more generally found in insects, and provide physiological evidence that carotenoids such as 11-cis-retinal can promote visual pigment biogenesis in the dark. PMID: 19020100
Protein Families
Carotenoid oxygenase family
Tissue Specificity
Expression follows organogenesis of the larval Bolwig's organ (BO), which mediates larval photophobic behavior. In the adult, expression is restricted exclusively to the brain. Expressed in both neuronal cells and glia cells. Not active within photorecept
