Target Background

Function
Required for photoreceptor cell function. The ninaC proteins combines putative serine/threonine-protein kinase and myosin activities. Essential for the expression and stability of the rtp protein in the photoreceptors. The rtp/ninaC complex is required for stability of inad and inac and the normal termination of phototransduction in the retina.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Rapid calcium (Ca2+)/calmodulin-dependent release of arrestin (Arr)2 from NINAC upon Ca2+ influx accounts for the acceleration of translocation by phototransduction. PMID: 22764229
  2. Termination of phototransduction requires a complex with NINAC and retinophilin, a complex which provides stability to protein kinase C and INAD (inactivation no afterpotential D). PMID: 20739554
  3. The light-dependent translocation of Arr2 into Drosophila rhabdomeres requires PI-mediated interactions between Arr2 and the NINAC myosin III. PMID: 15233920
  4. Data suggest that the photoreceptor-specific myosin III NINAC is involved in G(q)alpha transport in Drosophila photoreceptors. PMID: 15340015
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm. Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton. Nucleus. Membrane.
Protein Families
TRAFAC class myosin-kinesin ATPase superfamily, Myosin family; Protein kinase superfamily, Ser/Thr protein kinase family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in the phototransducing compartment of photoreceptor cells, the rhabdomeres (at protein level).
