Target Background

Function
Multidrug efflux pump that functions as a Na(+)/drug antiporter. Confers resistance to several drugs, such as norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ethidium, kanamycin and streptomycin.
Gene References into Functions
  1. In this study, we investigated the role(s) of acidic amino acid residues Asp32, Glu251, and Asp367 in the transmembrane region of NorM by site-directed mutagenesis. PMID: 15716425
  2. Inactivation of norM rendered V. cholerae hypersensitive towards fluoroquinolones such as norfloxacin/ciprofloxacin. Moreover the topology of NorM was determined and amino acid residures involved in norfloxacin resistance was identified. PMID: 16954325
  3. A gene (norM) for a putative multidrug efflux protein shows different substrate specificities in V. parahaemolyticus and E. coli PMID: 9661020
  4. In this study, we conclude that NorM is an Na(+)-driven Na(+)/drug antiporter, which is the first example in the biological world. PMID: 11073914
Subcellular Location
Cell inner membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Multi antimicrobial extrusion (MATE) (TC 2.A.66.1) family
