Target Background

Function
Plays a role in the uptake of a range of molecules including phosphatidylserine, lipids and xenobiotic compounds from the intestine to surrounding tissues. Possesses lipid transfer activity. Mediates transport of lipids from intestine to reproductive tract. Binds phosphatidylserine. Plays a role in efficient clearance of cell corpses by mediating phosphatidylserine appearance on phagocytic cells, thus promoting phagocytic engulfment of apoptotic cells. Vital for embryonic development.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The data suggest that NRF-5 may act with CED-7 and TTR-52 to mediate phosphatidylserine transfer from apoptotic cells to engulfing cells and thus promotes engulfment by phagocytes. PMID: 22727700
  2. Nrf-5 is expressed in the intestine and is likely secreted into the pseudocoelomic fluid, where it could function to transport fluoxetine. PMID: 16118202
Subcellular Location
Secreted.
Protein Families
BPI/LBP/Plunc superfamily, BPI/LBP family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in the body wall muscle cells and detected at the basal surface of pharyngeal cells and basal-lateral membranes of the intestine.
