Target Background

Function

RNA methyltransferase that methylates tRNAs. Methylates cytosine to 5-methylcytosine (m5C) at position 34 of intron-containing tRNA(Leu)(CAA) precursors. Required for short-term memory.

The highly conserved NSUN2 is not essential for survival, gross nervous-system function, or elementary behavior such as locomotion, whereas in both contexts, NSUN2 is apparently crucial for higher cognitive functioning. PMID: 22541559
