Target Background

Function
Part of the processive rRNA transcription and antitermination complex (rrnTAC). The complex forms an RNA-chaperone ring around the RNA exit tunnel of RNA polymerase (RNAP). It supports rapid transcription and antitermination of rRNA operons, cotranscriptional rRNA folding, and annealing of distal rRNA regions to allow correct ribosome biogenesis. Involved in transcription antitermination. Required for transcription of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. Binds specifically to the boxA antiterminator sequence of the ribosomal RNA (rrn) operons. The affinity of NusB for the boxA RNA sequence is significantly increased in the presence of the ribosomal protein S10. NusB may serve as a loading factor that ensures efficient entry of S10 into the transcription complexes. It also modulates the rrn boxA-mediated transcription elongation rates.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Conservation of putative NusB/E binding sites upstream of Nus factor genes suggests that Nus factor autoregulation occurs in many bacterial species. PMID: 29229908
  2. Authors propose that another major role for the Nus-modified transcription complex in rrn operons is as an RNA chaperone insuring co-ordination of 16S rRNA folding and RNase III processing that results in production of proper 30S ribosome subunits. PMID: 23190053
  3. Strains carrying either a nusA mutation or a nusB mutation have defects in transcription of 23S rRNA. PMID: 15716433
  4. NusB and NusE (S10) proteins binding to boxA RNA nucleates the formation of the antitermination complex involved in controlling rRNA transcription in Escherichia coli PMID: 16109710
