Target Background

Function
High affinity carnitine transporter involved in the active cellular uptake of carnitine. Also transports organic cations. Regulates lateral root development.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Variation in ORGANIC CATION TRANSPORTER 1 (OCT1) is at least partially responsible for the difference in root length responses to exogenous cadaverine. OCT1 expression was higher in Cape Verde Islands than in Landsberg erecta accessions. PMID: 25403917
  2. AtOCT1 (organic cation/carnitine transporter) can transport carnitine, at least in yeast, and its loss of function affects carnitinerelated mechanisms and root development. [AtOCT1] PMID: 17521409
Subcellular Location
Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Major facilitator (TC 2.A.1) superfamily, Organic cation transporter (TC 2.A.1.19) family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in vascular tissues and at sites of lateral root formation. Mostly present in floral buds, flowers and immature siliques.
