Target Background

Function
Transcriptional regulator with essential functions in the germline and soma. Plays an essential role in regulating the formation of apical cell extensions such as denticles and aristae, and initiating cytoskeletal remodeling during epidermal differentiation.; Transcriptional repressor which functions in postembryonic development. The full-length unprocessed form acts as a transcriptional repressor (Transcriptional repressor svb).; Transcriptional activator which initiates trichome development and also promotes tarsal joint development. Has an essential somatic role regulating the tal-dependent formation of trichomes, and initiating cytoskeletal remodeling during epidermal differentiation. Function with SoxN is required for correct denticle morphogenesis on the embryonic epidermis. SoxN and svb appear to act both independently and in conjunction with each other to activate certain genes involved in denticle morphogenesis; Svb appears to be involved in regulating denticle length whereas SoxN regulates the denticle base circumference. Also functions in the development of other apical cell extensions such as bristles. Also has an important role in tarsal joint development, repressing expression of the N ligand Dl and defining its signaling boundary.; Transcriptional repressor which is specifically involved in female germline development, where it functions antagonistically to isoform D. Negatively regulates expression of otu and may also have autoregulatory activity. Negatively regulates expression of piwi in the primordial germ cells (PGCs).; Transcriptional activator which is specifically involved in female germline development, where it functions antagonistically to isoform C. Necessary and sufficient for normal oogenesis. Required in the primordial germ cells (PGCs) for normal development of male and female germline cells. Plays a role in germline sex determination. Binds the promoter DNA and positively regulates the transcription of the otu gene in a stage-specific manner. May have autoregulatory activity.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Co-expressing ectopic SoxN with svb rescued diverse denticle morphologies. Conversely, removing SoxN activity eliminated the residual denticles found in svb mutant embryos. Furthermore, several known Svb target genes are also activated by SoxN, and we have discovered two novel target genes of SoxN that are expressed in denticle-producing cells and that are regulated independently of Svb. PMID: 28506986
  2. Report the high-resolution functional dissection of a robust enhancer of the shavenbaby gene that has contributed to morphological evolution. We found that robustness is encoded by many binding sites for the transcriptional activator Arrowhead and that, during evolution, some of these activator sites were lost, weakening enhancer activity. PMID: 27840106
  3. Hox protein Ultrabithorax (Ubx) in complex with its cofactor Extradenticle (Exd) bound specifically to clusters of very low affinity sites in enhancers of the shavenbaby gene of Drosophila. These low affinity sites conferred specificity for Ubx binding in vivo, but multiple clustered sites were required for robust expression when embryos developed in variable environments. PMID: 25557079
  4. Multiple shavenbaby enhancers drive overlapping patterns of expression in the embryo. PMID: 24218640
  5. study shows peptides of 11 to 32 amino acids encoded by polished rice(pri)sORF gene control epidermal differentiation by modifying Shavenbaby (Svb); Pri peptides trigger amino-terminal truncation of Svb which converts Svb from a repressor to an activator PMID: 20647469
  6. ovo-B is strongly expressed in the 2X germ cells in either a male or a female soma (ovo-B) PMID: 11861560
  7. genetic and gene expression data show regulatory changes of the shavenbaby/ovo (svb/ovo) gene underlie independent cases of morphological convergence PMID: 12931187
  8. shavenbaby governs an evolutionarily conserved developmental module consisting of a set of genes collectively responsible for trichome formation PMID: 16933974
  9. SoxN is necessary and sufficient to cell-autonomously direct the expression of svb. PMID: 17611224
  10. identification of three distinct svb enhancers from D. melanogaster driving reporter gene expression in partly overlapping patterns that together recapitulate endogenous svb expression. PMID: 17632547
  11. Results show that the embryonic expression of dsc73 requires Shavenbaby, a transcription factor regulating cuticle formation. PMID: 18351665
