Target Background

Function
Required for muscle development probably through the regulation of the actin-myosin cytoskeleton. Component of an integrin containing attachment complex, which is required for muscle maintenance. During the formation of neuromuscular junctions at the larval stage, negatively regulates membrane protrusion from body wall muscles, probably through lamins such as epi-1, lam-2 and unc-52. Required for distal tip cell migration and dorsal pathfinding. Required for egg-laying. May play a role in cell motility and cell-cell interactions. Plays a role in vulval development. Probably within the alpha pat-2/beta pat-3 integrin receptor complex, plays a role in the negative regulation of let-23 signaling and vulval induction. This is probably partly by restricting the mobility of the let-23 receptor on the plasma membrane of vulval cells which thereby attenuates let-23 signaling.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Taken together, the cytoplasmic tails of alpha integrins can bypass signaling from members of the Rho family of GTPases during development. PMID: 25576691
  2. The formation of such halos depends on the integrins PAT-2/PAT-3, UNC-112 and the GEF protein UIG-1, but not on the canonical ced-1/6/7 or ced-2/5/12 signaling modules PMID: 24632947
  3. down-regulation of ina-1 is necessary for distal tip cell migration cessation and the up-regulation of pat-2 is required for directionality PMID: 17606640
Subcellular Location
Membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein.
Protein Families
Integrin alpha chain family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in body-wall muscle cells, distal tip cells, and vulval tissue.
