Target Background

Function
Adds poly(A) tail to the 3' end of many RNAs, which usually targets these RNAs for decay. Plays a significant role in the global control of gene expression, through influencing the rate of transcript degradation, and in the general RNA quality control. Rho-independent transcription terminators may serve as polyadenylation signals. Seems to be involved in plasmid copy number control.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Poly(A)polymerase I participates in the ability of the bacteria to adapt to and survive detrimental conditions by constantly monitoring and adjusting to its environment. PMID: 23123524
  2. THe data demonstrates that regulation of PAP I is critical not for preventing the decay of mRNAs, but rather for maintaining normal levels of functional tRNAs and protein synthesis in E. coli, a function for polyadenylation that has not been observed previously in any organism. PMID: 23241393
  3. Characterization of RNA fragments that accumulate in a PNPase deficient strain showed that Glu tRNA precursors still harbouring the 5' leader can be degraded by a 3' to 5' quality control pathway involving poly(A) polymerase. PMID: 22142150
  4. Data show that the inactivation of Hfq leads to a reduction in the ability of poly(A) polymerase I to add poly(A) tails to mRNAs containing Rho-independent transcription terminators. PMID: 15522076
  5. There are three transcription start sites upstream of the pcnB coding sequence; activities of at least two of these promoters are in inverse correlation to bacterial growth rates. PMID: 16330100
  6. linker between transcription and mRNA degradation via sigmaS proteolysis with the ultimate goal of adapting and surviving to growth-limiting conditions. PMID: 16556229
  7. Null mutations in pcnB, encoding poly(A) polymerase I (PAP I), and in hfq, encoding the RNA chaperone Hfq, suppress toxicity caused by overproduction of SprE. PMID: 19767441
