Target Background

Function
High-affinity transporter for external inorganic phosphate. Acts as a H(+):phosphate symporter in both low- and high-Pi conditions. Confers sensitivity to arsenate.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The phosphate-binding site residues were shown to be well conserved between all the plant PHT1 proteins and Saccharomyces cerevisiae PHO84. PMID: 27911737
  2. ALIX mediates high-affinity phosphate transporter PHT1.1 trafficking to maintain phosphate homeostasis. PMID: 26342016
  3. A model for differential trafficking of PHT1 to the plasma membrane or vacuole as a function of phosphate concentration, is proposed. PMID: 21521698
  4. An Arsenic(V)-tolerant mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana named pht1;1-3, was identified which harbors a semidominant allele coding for the high-affinity Pi transporter PHT1;1. pht1;1-3 displays a slow rate of As(V) uptake. PMID: 17400898
Subcellular Location
Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Major facilitator superfamily, phosphate:H(+) symporter (TC 2.A.1.9) family
Tissue Specificity
Mostly expressed in roots, especially in trichoblasts and in emerging secondary roots and root hairs, but not in root tips. Also present in hydathodes, axillary buds and peripheral endosperm of germinating seeds.
