Target Background

Function
High-affinity transporter for external inorganic phosphate. Acts as a H(+):phosphate symporter in both low- and high-Pi conditions. Confers sensitivity to arsenate.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Pht1;1 and Pht1;4 form homomeric and heteromeric complexes. The homomeric interaction among Pht1;1 proteins was disrupted by mutation of Tyr 312 to Asp, but not to Ala or Phe. Modifications to the Pht1;1 higher-order structure affects Pi transport. PMID: 25754174
  2. The region containing the PHR1-binding site motif is essential for the basal expression of AtPht1;4 in the roots, but that it does not control the Pi responsiveness of AtPht1;4. PMID: 19508364
Subcellular Location
Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Major facilitator superfamily, phosphate:H(+) symporter (TC 2.A.1.9) family
Tissue Specificity
Mostly expressed in roots, in tissues connecting the lateral roots to the primary root. Also present in flowers, in senescing anther filaments and in the abscission zone at the base of siliques. Expressed in hydathodes and axillary buds, and in some senes
