Target Background

Function
Auxin transporter regulating intracellular auxin homeostasis and metabolism. Mediates the auxin transport from the cytosol into the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum. May also act as an auxin efflux carrier when located to the cell membrane. PIN5 and PIN8 may have an antagonistic/compensatory activity. Involved in unfolded protein response (UPR) activation. Involved in the control of vein patterning. Promotes vein formation. PIN5, PIN6, and PIN8 control vein network geometry, but they are expressed in mutually exclusive domains of leaf vascular cells.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The functional relationship of IRE1 and PIN5 is demonstrated by that an ire1 pin5 triple mutant enhances defects of unfolded protein response (UPR) activation and auxin homeostasis in ire1 or pin5. PMID: 24180465
  2. Arabidopsis thaliana PIN5, an atypical member of the PIN gene family, encodes a functional auxin transporter that is required for auxin-mediated development PMID: 19506555
Subcellular Location
Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Auxin efflux carrier (TC 2.A.69.1) family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in elongating parts of hypocotyl, cotyledon vasculature and guard cells. Detected in root pericycle and root tip and at later developmental stages in leaves, stems and flowers. Expressed in veins of mature leaves.
