Target Background

Function
Involved in the metabolism of all major classes of plastid RNAs. Required for efficient 3'-end processing of mRNAs and 3'-end maturation of rRNA transcripts, but is not sufficient to mediate their degradation. Mediates tRNA degradation. May function as a poly(A) mRNA 3'-5' degrading phosphorylase. May be required for plastid ribosome assembly and non-coding RNA biogenesis and accumulation. Seems not required for efficient translation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Chloroplast PNPase has a major role in maturing mRNA and rRNA 3'-ends, but also participates in RNA degradation through exonucleolytic digestion and polyadenylation. PMID: 21466602
  2. The activity of the chloroplast PNPase is involved in plant acclimation to phosphorus(P) availability and that it may help maintain an appropriate balance of P metabolites even under normal growth conditions.[PNPase] PMID: 19710229
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast.
Protein Families
Polyribonucleotide nucleotidyltransferase family
