Target Background

Function
Template-directed low-fidelity DNA polymerase specifically involved in DNA repair. Able to extend primer-terminal mispairs, and to insert nucleotides opposite to a single 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoGuanine (8-oxoG) lesion and moderately extend from the resulting primer end, thus leading to both error-free and error-prone bypass of 8-oxoG DNA lesions. Probably involved in consecutive DNA replication cycles in the absence of mitosis. Binds preferentially template-primer DNA substrates or single-stranded DNA. Plays an important role in translesion synthesis, where the normal high-fidelity DNA polymerases cannot proceed and DNA synthesis stalls. Depending on the context, it inserts the correct base, but causes frequent base transitions, transversions and frameshifts.

Nucleus.
Protein Families
DNA polymerase type-Y family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in roots, leaves, stems, flowers and siliques. Present in endoreduplicating cells.
