Target Background

Function

Proline transporter that mediates proline and glycine betaine transport. May be involved in the uptake of compatible solutes from the soil into the roots, or in retrieval of apoplastic amino acids delivered to the roots via the phloem. May be involved in delivery of proline to wounding sites. When expressed in a heterologous system (yeast), imports D- and L-proline, glycine betaine and GABA across the plasma membrane. Has the same affinity for D- and L-proline.

A new member of the proline transporter gene family, AtProT3, was isolated from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), and its properties were compared to AtProT1 and AtProT2. PMID: 15618414
