Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the sodium-dependent uptake of extracellular L-proline. This protein is also capable of using lithium as the transport cation. Also catalyzes the uptake of propionate.
Gene References into Functions
  1. the results demonstrate that TM6' plays a central role in substrate binding and release on the inner side of the membrane also in PutP and extend the knowledge on functionally relevant amino acids in transporters with a LeuT-type structural fold. PMID: 27793991
  2. Remarkably,as proposed computationally and discovered here experimentally, residues Y140, W244, and Y248 of transmembrane segments 4 and 7 are particularly important for PutP function and are suggested to participate in proline binding and/or gating. PMID: 21130773
  3. backbone models of PutP exhibiting a pronounced kink near residue T341, which is involved in substrate binding, were obtained. The kink may be associated with a hinge that allows the protein to open and close an inwardly oriented cavity. PMID: 19134477
  4. Results describe the function of transmembrane domain IX in the Na+/proline transporter PutP. PMID: 18692508
Subcellular Location
Cell inner membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
