Target Background

Function
Recruited by UPF3 associated with the EJC core at the cytoplasmic side of the nuclear envelope and the subsequent formation of an UPF1-UPF2-UPF3 surveillance complex (including UPF1 bound to release factors at the stalled ribosome) is believed to activate NMD. In cooperation with UPF3 stimulates both ATPase and RNA helicase activities of UPF1. Binds spliced mRNA. Involved in nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) of mRNAs containing premature stop codons by associating with the nuclear exon junction complex (EJC). Required for plant development and adaptation to environmental stresses, including plant defense and response to wounding.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data suggests a complex regulatory network, likely composed of light signaling and NMD factor-mediated pathways involving NMD factor proteins, UPF1, UPF2, and UPF3, in influencing plant development and adaption to environmental stresses. [UPF2] PMID: 22353561
  2. The nonsense-mediated decay factor UPF2 localize to the nucleolus, suggesting that the Arabidopsis nucleolus is therefore involved in identifying aberrant mRNAs and NMD. PMID: 19602621
Subcellular Location
Nucleus, nucleolus. Cytoplasm. Cytoplasm, perinuclear region.
