Target Background

Function
Nuclear genome-encoded factor involved in ribosome biogenesis in chloroplasts. Binds specific group II introns in chloroplasts and facilitates their splicing. Is required for rRNA maturation in plastids and may contribute to the assembly of the large (50S) ribosomal subunit. Required for normal development of chloroplasts. Required for the expression of transcripts encoding plastid-localized enzymes involved in abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis. Required for maintenance of ABA levels and response to salt stress. Possesses RNA chaperone activity for proper splicing of introns in chloroplasts. Essential for chloroplast function and abiotic stress responses.
Gene References into Functions
  1. RH3 is highly expressed in greening tissues of germinating seedlings, and chloroplasts in the rh3-4 mutant have fewer ribosomes, lower amounts of chlorophyll, and poorly developed thylakoids. rh3-4 seedlings displayed ABA-deficient phenotypes. PMID: 23227895
  2. The function of chloroplast RH3 in maize (Zea mays; ZmRH3) and Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana; AtRH3) was determined. PMID: 22576849
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast. Plastid, chloroplast stroma.
Protein Families
DEAD box helicase family, DDX21/DDX50 subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Highly expressed in young seedlings.
