Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the ATP-dependent translocation of sphingoid long-chain bases (LCBs) from the cytoplasmic site toward the extracytoplasmic side of the membrane (flip-flop). Involved in the establishment of the functional lipid asymmetry of the plasma membrane. Regulates intracellular levels of LCBs, sphingolipid precursors that are growth inhibitory at increased levels.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Activation of RSB1 transcription is an important feature of the retrograde response allowing normal detoxification of an endogenous sphingolipid precursor. PMID: 16407254
  2. The pH-responsive Rim101 pathway, the protein kinase Mck1, and the transcription factor Mot3 all act in lipid asymmetry signaling and the Rim101 pathway was activated in response to a change in lipid asymmetry. PMID: 18287536
Subcellular Location
Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Lipid-translocating exporter (LTE) (TC 9.A.26.1) family
