Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the biosynthesis of ethanolamine from serine. Highly specific for L-serine and does not attack D-serine, L-phosphoserine, phosphatidylserine, L-histidine L-glutamate L-tyrosine or L-tryptophan. Decarboxylation of free serine is the major source of ethanolamine production in plants and ethanolamine metabolism is crucial for the synthesis of choline, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC), and thus for plant growth.
Gene References into Functions
  1. sdc-1 mutants showed leaf necrosis, multiple inflorescences, sterility in flower, and early flowering in short day conditions. The defects were rescued by ethanolamine, suggesting the role of ethanolamine as well as serine decarboxylase in development. PMID: 22489147
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm, cytosol.
Protein Families
Group II decarboxylase family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in roots, leaves, flowers and siliques.
