Target Background

Function
Plays a central role in chromosome cohesion during mitosis and meiosis divisions by preventing premature dissociation of cohesin complex from centromeres after prophase, when most of cohesin complex dissociates from chromosomes arms. Probably act by protecting REC8 and RAD21 from separase degradation during anaphase. Also acts as a spindle checkpoint component required for sensing tension between sister chromatids during mitosis, its degradation when they separate preventing cell cycle arrest and chromosome loss in anaphase, a time when sister chromatids are no longer under tension.

  2. sgo1 mutants with abolished binding to H2A or PP2A(Rts1) displayed premature SAC silencing. PMID: 28040741
  3. Sgo1 operates as a multifunctional hub that coordinates two centromeric functions essential for correct chromosome segregation. PMID: 24945276
  4. budding yeast shugoshin Sgo1 dissociates from the pericentromere reversibly in response to tension PMID: 24939933
  5. Sister kinetochores are frequently bi-oriented in the absence of chiasmata and that Sgo1 prevents equational segregation of sister chromatids during achiasmate meiosis I. PMID: 21330786
  6. Sgo1 is required for sensing tension between sister chromatids during mitosis, and its degradation when they separate may prevent cell cycle arrest and chromosome loss in anaphase, a time when sister chromatids are no longer under tension PMID: 15637284
  7. Sgo1 is required for protecting centromeric cohesins from removal during meiosis I, localizes to cohesin-associated regions (CARs) at the centromere PMID: 16357219
