Target Background

Function
Essential protein. Sigma factors are initiation factors that promote the attachment of plastid-encoded RNA polymerase (PEP) to specific initiation sites (e.g. psbA and psbD) and are then released. Essential for blue light-mediated transcription of psbD, which encodes the photosystem II reaction center protein D2. Plays a role in reproduction. Required during female gametophyte development.
Gene References into Functions
  1. the circadian regulation of chloroplast transcription by SIG5 was predominantly dependent on blue light and cryptochrome. PMID: 27716936
  2. The role of SIG5 protein in the transcription of chloroplast genes via protein phosphatase 2C-dependent activation of nuclear genes PMID: 25976841
  3. nuclear-encoded SIGMA FACTOR5 (SIG5) controls circadian rhythms of transcription of several chloroplast genes, revealing one pathway by which the nuclear-encoded circadian oscillator controls rhythms of chloroplast gene expression. PMID: 23493713
  4. The NEP (the (phage-type) plastid RNA polymerase) promoter cluster can help maintain RNA synthesis in situations where no functional sigma factor is available for PEP (the bacterial-type plastid RNA polymerase). PMID: 17118361
  5. Cryptochromes 1 and 2 mediate SIG5 transcription at different light wavelengths. SIG5 activates the psbD blue-light-responsive promoter. PMID: 18532976

Sigma-70 factor family
Tissue Specificity
Mostly expressed in siliques and flowers, to a lesser extent in leaves and stems, and barely expressed in roots (at protein level). Isoform 2 accumulates specifically in flowers, whereas isoform 1 is expressed in both leaves and flowers. Present in old se
