Target Background

Function
Putative negative growth factor. Antagonist of dpp, a protein involved in patterning the dorsal region and in the development of the neuroectoderm; dpp inhibition is enhanced by tsg. Required for establishment of a narrow stripe of peak levels of BMP signaling in the dorsal midline of early embryos, that will give rise to the amnioserosa.
Gene References into Functions
  1. These results suggest that synergistic interactions between Dl and Zld and between DI and Bcd are required for broad sog expression. PMID: 27528040
  2. This does not occur through cell-autonomous crosstalk between cGMP and BMP signal transduction, but likely through altered extracellular activity of Sog. PMID: 26440503
  3. Results suggest that integrins act by binding and possibly regulating the activity/availability of different forms of Sog during pupal development through an adhesion independent mechanism. PMID: 12835400
  4. Cysteine repeat domains and adjacent sequences determine distinct morphogenetic protein modulatory activities of sog. PMID: 15082551
  5. Sog and Cv promote BMP signaling by transporting a BMP heterodimer from the longitudinal veins into the crossvein regions. PMID: 15936330
  6. The effects of site-directed mutagenesis of tolloid protein on its' ability to cleave Sog protein are reported. PMID: 16488892
  7. sog acts during oogenesis to promote the formation of dorsal anterior structures of the eggshell and to establish the embryonic dorsal-ventral (DV) axis. PMID: 16781701

Subcellular Location
Golgi apparatus membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein. Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein. Secreted.
Protein Families
Chordin family
Tissue Specificity
Abuts the dorsal dpp-expressing cells in a lateral stripe 14-16 cells wide. Later in embryogenesis it is expressed in neuroectoderm and in the endoderm spaced along the anterior-posterior axis of the developing gut.
