Target Background

Function
Component of the spanin complex that disrupts the host outer membrane and participates in cell lysis during virus exit. The spanin complex conducts the final step in host lysis by disrupting the outer membrane after holin and endolysin action have permeabilized the inner membrane and degraded the host peptidoglycans. Host outer membrane disruption due to local fusion between the inner and outer membrane performed by the spanin complex.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data show that Rz-Rz1 complexes form large rod-shaped structures which, although heterogeneous, exhibit periodicities that may reflect coiled-coil bundling as well as a long dimension that matches the width of the periplasm. PMID: 20734329
Subcellular Location
Host cell outer membrane; Lipid-anchor; Periplasmic side.
Protein Families
Caudovirales o-spanin family
