Target Background

Function

ATP-dependent microtubule severing protein that specifically recognizes and cuts microtubules. Probably by regulating microtubule remodeling, plays a role in new synapse formation in GABAergic DD (Dorsal D type) neurons.

The C-terminal alpha-helix of SPAS-1, a Caenorhabditis elegans spastin homologue, is crucial for microtubule severing. PMID: 22561316
We propose that microtubule binding domain (MTBD) of SPAS-1 plays a critical role in enrichment of SPAS-1 to microtubules, where SPAS-1 is concentrated and able to form a stable hexamer, subsequently its ATPase activity is stimulated. PMID: 19619244
