Target Background

Function

Catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to form sphingosine 1-phosphate (SPP), a lipid mediator with both intra- and extracellular functions. Also acts on sphinganine. Required for neurotransmitter release from neuromuscular junctions. Acts by recruiting the synaptic vesicle priming protein unc-13 to synapses.

This study shows that SPHK-1 promotes neurotransmitter release in vivo and identifies a novel muscarinic pathway that regulates SphK abundance at presynaptic terminals. PMID: 22588719
