Target Background

Function
Cleaves presequences (transit peptides) from chloroplastic protein precursors. Initially recognizes a precursor by binding to the C-terminus of its transit peptide and then removes the transit peptide in a single endoproteolytic step. In a next step, pursues the cleavage of transit peptide to a subfragment form.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data suggest that one copy of the SPP gene (At5g42390) is able to produce sufficient SPP protein for normal development under standard growth conditions. PMID: 21857988
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast stroma.
Protein Families
Peptidase M16 family
