Target Background

Function

Proteolytically removes the C-terminal three residues of farnesylated A-factor mating pheromone. Also acts to cleave the N-terminal extension of the pheromone. Does not act on Ras.

It appears that the very nature of signal recognition particle (SRP)-independent translocation makes it susceptible to unique challenges such as clogging; upon clogging, Ste24 is recruited to the translocon, most likely with other factors. There, Ste24 proceeds to cleave the clogged protein, thereby resolving the stalemate scenario and salvaging the translocon. PMID: 26771486
