Target Background

Function
Microtubule binding protein that promotes the stabilization of dynamic microtubules. Required for separation of the spindle poles during mitotic spindle formation. May cross-link overlapping antiparallel microtubules in the spindle midzone.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The withdrawal of Stu1, a CLASP essential for spindle integrity, from microtubules and attached kinetochores disrupts the organization of the spindle and thus allows the enhanced formation of dynamic random microtubules that span the nucleus and are ideal to capture unattached kinetochores. PMID: 29491436
  2. We show that only TOGL2 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CLASP Stu1 binds to tubulin and is required for polymerization of spindle microtubules (MTs) in vivo. PMID: 24862575
  3. sequestering of Stu1 by detached kinetochores serves as a checkpoint that keeps spindle poles in close proximity until all kinetochores are captured PMID: 19952112
Subcellular Location
Nucleus. Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, spindle. Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton. Chromosome, centromere, kinetochore. Note=Localizes to kinetochore microtubules and to the overlapping microtubules of the spindle midzone.
